The gas market in Ireland has been restructured in compliance with the EU Gas Directive 2003/55/EC . The main requirement of the directive, is the legal and independence of the system operator in both transmission and distribution systems. Bord Gáis Éireann, (BGÉ), as system owner, trade in the gas supply market and are therefore required to separate the system operator function into a distinct legal entity 'Gaslink' to avoid non-competitive behaviour in supplying gas. BGÉ maintains ownership of the transmission and distribution assets, leaving the system operator functions of the systems to Gaslink.
Gaslink executes most of its functions through a Service Agreement with BGÉ and Bord Gáis Networks (BGN).The Gaslink management team focuses on the higher level requirements of its responsibilities. Operational processes and support are provided through a service agreement with BGN. Gaslink oversees that BGN delivers its services on Gaslink's behalf through monitoring its performance against the terms set out in the agreement.
